Minister calls satnav summit
Satnav manufacturers are to be told to update their maps more regularly to prevent the chaos caused by drivers being misdirected by their navigation systems.
Local authorities are also be handed greater powers to decide which roads should be used for through traffic under a shake-up ordered by the Department for Transport. The moves will be discussed at a March Whitehall summit called by Norman Baker, the local transport minister.
They are intended to stop villages being blighted by coaches and foreign lorries which have got stuck after being guided down unsuitable narrow lanes,
"Out of date directions mean misdirected traffic – a scourge of local communities,” Mr Baker said.
“It is vital highway authorities, mapping companies and satnav manufacturers work more closely together to provide drivers with accurate, up-to-date information on traffic restrictions such as narrow roads or low bridges.
